More arrests yesterday in Novi Sad on the orders of the SNS?

The Zajedno political party stated that last night’s arrest of their activists in Novi Sad was carried out ‘under the command’ of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

Several members of Zajedno were arrested last night in Novi Sad, while collecting signatures for a petition against the erection of the ‘Monument to the Innocent Victims of 1944/45’ in front of the Serbian National Theatre, after they had written a message to defend the city and refused to identify themselves to the police. The members of the Zajedno party stated that they had written the graffiti because of “crimes that are being committed in Novi Sad, from urbicide to monuments to fascist criminals”.

“Do past and present criminals have to put up with Vučić and Orban exchanging decorations? Our young activists will not be intimidated by police patrols and arrests, although this is the obvious intention of the police. Freedom has no price,” said Zajedno co-chair Biljana Stojković, as reported by the party.

She assessed that after ‘breaking down the door and the violent attempt to break into the party’s premises in Novi Sad a fortnight ago and the beating, last night’s arrest represents a ‘new orchestrated attack’ on their activists.

“Writing on the pavement is not a punishable offence. Our activists were arrested precisely because they are protecting the facades and their city,’ the party said. The erection of the ‘Monument to the Innocent Victims of 1944/45’ is opposed by a large part of the public and the opposition parties in Novi Sad, because the list of victims includes people convicted of war crimes and Nazi collaborators in World War II.
