Miodrag Kostic interested in buying Mercator S?

Serbian tycoon, Miodrag Kostic has expressed interest in purchasing Mercator S, a retail chain which operates under Agrokor in Serbia, the Slovenian portal Siol.net reports. Mercator S is the main company in the Mercator Group

In the last few weeks, Kostic bought Mercator’s liabilities towards Austrian and Italian banks for around 28 million EUR, while his negotiations with a consortium of banks, that had granted a syndicated loan in the amount of 14 million EUR to Mercator, are also going to be finished soon – the Slovenian website states, citing anonymous sources.

Kostic, who is the owner of MK Group, had invested a lot of money in real estate and tourism in Slovenia so far. The first investment that he made there was acquiring of the Kempinski Hotel in the town of Portoroz for 24 million EUR in 2015. He is also among the biggest shareholders of Gorenjska Bank, where he is looking to buy the majority share from the Slovenian funds.

According to the official data published by Mercator S, the company owes about EUR 130 million to suppliers in Serbia, and around EUR 135 million to banks. As the Informer daily reports, Mercator S owes EUR 40 million to MK Group alone, and the debt could be included in the sales and purchase arrangement.
