Minister of Innovation and Technological Development, Nenad Popovic met with the owner of the largest Chinese IT company Alibaba, Jack Ma.
Popovic and Ma met on the margins of the first Digital China Summit, opened today in the city of Fuji, the capital of the Chinese province of Fujian. The two discussed the potential of cooperation between Serbia and China in the field of innovation and the digital economy.
Popovic expressed Serbia’s strong support for the Chinese Belt and Road initiative, and pointed out that the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic and the President of China, Xi Jinping share the vision of creating a unique digital space that would create new opportunities for cooperation, networking and joint progress of all the countries that were a part of that vision. “It is a vision of peace, stability, cooperation and common economic prosperity,” said Minister Popovic.
He underlined that the presidents of Serbia and China agreed on establishing the best possible cooperation between the two countries in the field of innovation and digital economy.
“The result of this agreement is the commencement of construction of a Serbian-Chinese Industrial Park in Belgrade, jointly implemented by Serbia and China’s state-owned company, China Road and Bridge Corporation. This will be the largest, state-of-the-art industrial park, and the largest Chinese investment in innovation South Europe,” said Popovic.
At the meeting, Popovic also spoke about artificial intelligence, virtual reality, expanded reality, robotics, digitalization of industry and cyber security being the pillars of economic development in the digital era. “China is the world leader in these processes and therefore we want to rely heavily on Chinese experience in creating the digital future of Serbia,” Popovic stressed.
The first ever Digital China Summit will last two days and will gather over 500 of the largest Chinese innovation companies. The theme of the Summit is the building “digital China”. Today’s official opening of the summit was attended by ministers and senior state officials from six world countries and the United Nations, with Minister Nenad Popovic as the only high-ranking official from a European country.
