Minimum wage negotiations begin today

Negotiations on setting the minimum wage for next year begin today, with a meeting of the working group made up of representatives of the Serbian Government, representative trade unions and the Employers’ Union, the Employers’ Union confirmed to Tanjug.

According to the Employers’ Union, all participants at today’s meeting will present their analyses, while the most important thing will be to hear the proposal from the Ministry of Finance.

“No one has come forward with a concrete proposal,” the Union said.

The trade union will insist that the minimum wage increase be in double digits, Dragan Todorović, a member of the negotiating team representing the Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Serbia, previously told Tanjug, stressing that all indicators show there are sufficient funds for such an increase. Todorović said that the Confederation of Trade Unions has not yet drawn up a specific proposal for the size of the minimum wage increase it will seek, as it is waiting to see the Government’s plan. “The increase must be in double digits in order to meet the announced target of an average salary of €1,400 in 2027 and a minimum wage of €640,” Todorović said. He also said that the trade union would seek wage increases across the entire public sector, rather than only an increase in the minimum wage.

According to Todorović, the union believes that the percentage increase in all wages must be at least in line with the percentage increase in the minimum wage in order to avoid wage compression.

Serbia’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Siniša Mali said at the beginning of August that the minimum wage currently stands at 65,554 dinars, or €551, and that, for the first time, the minimum consumer basket in Serbia is fully covered by the minimum wage.
