Mayor of Novi Sad: No curfew for minors

The Mayor of Novi Sad, Miloš Vučević, said that Novi Sad would not apply curfew for minors, adding that he was not a supporter of radical and repressive measures.

“Curfew is a rough and clumsy term that is unacceptable to me. This is a free city and the city of free citizens. Nobody can officially introduce curfew apart in some extreme situations. Curfews are absolutely unacceptable. I agree that we need to regulate this issue (minors being out in late hours) but we first need to talk to families and schools”, Vučević told Radio Television Serbia.

He said that prevention should be implemented, and added that he would consult the Coordination Body for the Prevention of Youth Violence, which comprises of educators, psychologists and parents.

“I think there are some other methods that we can apply, I’m not sure if the city is authorized to make a decision to introduce a curfew. What we need is a coordinated action with parents because we cannot solve these problems solely by administrative measures”, added Vučević.

On October 5th, the Coordination Body for Combating Violence in Elementary and Secondary Schools proposed new measures to combat peer violence, among which is a ban on minors spending time in public in late evenings, unaccompanied by an adult.

Member of the City Council for Education and President of the Coordination Body, Vladimir Jelić, says that this body will launch an initiative to prevent minors from being in the street without an adult in late evening hours. In his words, such a measure is already implemented in certain European countries and has given results.

The curfew means that children under the age of 16 are not allowed to be by themselves in public places in late evening hours without being accompanied by an adult. The summer curfew is supposed to be until midnight, and winter curfew until 10 pm.

The newly-founded Parents’ Elementary and High School Council from Novi Sad supported the proposal of the coordinating body and the introduction of the so-called Icelandic curfew model in the city.
