Linglong stops construction in Zrenjanin

The VOICE investigative website reported yesterday that construction of a Linglong plant in Zrenjanin, Vojvodina, has been temporarily halted.

The construction site was plagued by scandal following reports that Vietnamese workers were living there in dire conditions several months ago.

The Vojvodina Research and Analytical Centre (VOICE) also reported that major work on the construction site was discontinued for the next six months allegedly because transport costs were too high.

An anonymous Chinese manager said that the Vietnamese and Chinese workers were sent home and a VOICE source confirmed their departure. According to VOICE, about a dozen workers have been left behind to clean up the site.

The manager also said that construction equipment prices had gone up because of the war in Ukraine but added that the construction of the factory would continue. He went on to say that since the contractor (China Energy) is state-owned, it is up to the Chinese government to decide what comes next.

Also, the VOICE reports that there has been no private security at the construction site entrance since the day before yesterday.

The Sloga Trade Union Association has recently filed a formal request for an inspection into the contracts of some 50 workers from India and Turkey who have been brought in to replace the Vietnamese and Chinese workers at the Linlong site.
