Epidemiologist and a member of the Crisis Response Team, Dr Predrag Kon, has said that although there is constant talk of New Year’s Eve street parties, so far no one has given the green light to gatherings of more than 500 people.
“There is no epidemiologist, at least not in the Crisis Response Team, who will support such events. The fact is that either we will work proactively or we will wait for the infection curve to start growing and then implement measures,” Dr Kon said.
The expert pointed out that the epidemiological situation in Serbia is improving on a daily basis, but warned about the Omicron variant and the arrival of Serbian expats from abroad for the holidays, i.e. from countries where Omicron is spreading fast.
“We expect a greater spread of both the Omicron strain and the influenza virus in the near future, in the coming days. What we can expect is the epidemiological situation will worsen,” Dr Kon said, underlining that there will inevitably be a jump in the number of newly infected people in the second half of January.
