The former Serbian Foreign Minister and the Serbian candidate of for the position of the UN Secretary General, Vuk Jeremic plans to reveal his presidential candidacy after Orthodox Christmas.
Although he was taken by surprise when ombudsman Sasa Jankovic announced his candidacy on Wednesday, Jeremic is still sticking to his planned out pre-election strategy. According to the sources of the Novosti daily, this involves not only running for the country’s president, but also for a position of an MP if the early parliamentary elections were scheduled.
Jeremic has been campaigning for support from several political parties and individuals in Serbia which would participate in the election under one political ‘umbrella’, or rather as a newly formed movement, or a group of citizens.
His idea is that, once he announces his candidacy for president, he would also present the members of his political team which would include renowned world politicians willing to offer their solutions to the most burning issues in Serbia, particularly the economic ones.
Both support teams (Jeremic and Jankovic’s) claim that having two candidates from the opposition that are not politically affiliated, would not increase the winning chances of the candidate put forward by the ruling party. Unofficial sources confirm that Jeremic and Jankovic have agreed to support each other, regardless which one makes it to the second round of the presidential election.
Jeremic does count on the support from Boris Tadic’s party SDS, some parts of the Democratic Party (DS) and the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), the parties and individuals assembled in the National Coalition for Presidential Election (which includes Sanda Raskovic Ivic and Dijana Vukomanovic), and some of the electorate that currently supports the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), and who could support Jeremic if he makes it to the second round.
Jankovic, on the other hand, is counting on the “Enough is Enough” movement and the Democratic Party for support. The latter will make a decision about their candidate after New Year holidays.
