January year-on-year inflation in Serbia 15.8%

Serbia’s consumer prices rose by 15.8% in January compared to the previous year, after increasing by 15.1% the month before, the State Statistical Office said.

Compared to December 2022, Serbia’s consumer price index (CPI) went up 1.4% in January, after rising by 0.5% in December, the statistical office said in a monthly inflation report.

The monthly 1.4 pct price growth was driven mainly by administered (on account of previously announced revisions of electricity, gas and cigarette prices) and food prices, and to a lesser extent by prices within core inflation which grew at a slower pace than headline inflation (0.9 pct month-on-month). A dampening effect on inflation came from petroleum product prices that dipped by 2.4 pct month-on-month.

The biggest price increases in annual terms were observed in the sector of food and non-alcoholic beverages, of 23.7%, followed by housing, water and energy (+23%) and restaurants and hotels (+22.1%). On a monthly comparison basis, prices of housing, water and energy rose by 3.5% in January. The prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco rose by 2.5%, food and non-alcoholic beverages were more expensive by 1.6%, while transport prices fell by 0.6%.

In total, the price of goods rose by 17.9 percent in one year, and services by 9.4 percent.
