International documentary film festival DOK #8 starts this week

The eighth edition of the International Feature Documentary Film Festival DOK #8 will be held from 26 February to 1 March at the mts Hall in Belgrade, bringing audiences a carefully selected programme of contemporary documentary films.

The highly innovative film “Unborn Father” by Michal Bohm, influenced by avant-garde filmmakers, especially Jonas Mekas, follows six years of his everyday life and personal trials filmed on a Super 8 camera, fragmenting his own at times dramatic life with humorous commentary. The director will be a guest of the festival. “A Little Grey Wolf Will Come” by Zhanna Agalakova is an essay film in which the family crisis of a middle-aged Russian journalist intertwines with a moral and professional identity crisis, told in the first person. “Vacances” is a very candid observational film by Victoria Hely Hutchinson which, in the seemingly idyllic setting of a villa on the French Riviera, portrays an alpha female – a toxic mother and grandmother who at times ruthlessly controls the lives of her closest relatives.

“Forget About Cinema!” is an intimate and personal work in which the director Arantzazu Gomez Bayon, who will also attend the festival, confronts her motherhood with the challenges of her professional engagement as a filmmaker. In “Sunshower”, Micko Boanegres contrasts the hidden tranquillity of the environment in which the director’s retired grandparents live with the turbulent pre-election atmosphere in Indonesia, of which they remain unaware – somehow it feels familiar, does it not? “Unearthed” is a film that warns us of the gravity and omnipresence of the recent history of the Holocaust in the Auschwitz camp. It is based on a long-ago archaeological excavation that left a profound mark on director Ana Szczepanska, who remained preoccupied with the subject for the next 14 years.

DOK #8 will open with the film Orwell 2+2=5 on Thursday, 26 February at 7.30 pm in Hall 6 of mts Hall, and the full programme of the eighth edition of the DOK festival is available on the official website dokfest.rs.
