Industrial production in Serbia downy by 9.1%

Industrial production in Serbia in January this year was 9.1 per cent lower compared with the same month last year, and 14.4 per cent lower compared with last year’s average, the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia announced today.

All three branches of industry recorded a year-on-year decline in January. Manufacturing fell by 12.4 per cent, mining by 2.3 per cent, and electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 0.8 per cent.

The largest impact on the decline in manufacturing came from a stoppage at the Pančevo Oil Refinery, which, as part of NIS, found itself targeted by US sanctions, so crude oil only began flowing into the facility again in mid-January.

As a result, the production of coke and refined petroleum products in January fell by as much as 73.3 per cent compared with the same month in 2025.

However, other areas of manufacturing also had a poor month. Of the 23 sectors, 15 recorded a decline, and only eight posted year-on-year growth in output.

The manufacture of computers, electronic and optical products recorded a decline of 38 per cent, the chemical industry fell by 28 per cent, and the manufacture of other transport equipment dropped by as much as 60 per cent.

On the other hand, industry was supported by growth in car production, with this sector recording a year-on-year increase of 58 per cent.

By main industrial groupings, in January 2026 compared with January of the previous year, there was a decline in energy production of 21.1 per cent, durable consumer goods by 14.9 per cent, non-durable consumer goods by eight per cent, and intermediate goods, excluding energy, by 3.4 per cent, while growth was recorded in the production of capital goods, up by 8.6 per cent.

In mining, coal extraction decreased year on year in January by 15.6 per cent, while oil and gas extraction increased by 2.8 per cent, and metal ore mining, primarily referring to copper mines, rose by 10.6 per cent.
