The Independent American Film Festival the IndieBelgrade Festival) will take place at Dom Omladine in Belgrade from 13th to 16th September. The Festival will officially start with the screening of the film “The Miseducation of Cameron Post”, a teenage drama directed by Desiree Akhavan and written by Cecilia Frugiuele
The film won this year’s Sundance Film Festival and it features young and up and coming stars such as Chloe Moretz, Steven Hauck and Quinn Shephard.
The film is set in 1993 when a teenage Cameron (played by Moretz) is caught in the backseat of a car with the prom queen and sent away to a treatment centre in a remote area called God’s Promise. While she is being subjected to questionable gay conversion therapies, she bonds with some fellow residents as they pretend to go along with the process while waiting to be released.
This year’s edition of the IndieBelgrade Festival takes place under the slogan “From Independent Film to the Oscar“ and will feature six premieres at Dom Omladine from the most recent production of the American Independent Film, that will compete for a Grand Prix. The Festival is about socially engaged films that deal with important, often difficult topics, and will showcase the films that have already been shown at prestigious world festivals, the organizers say.
Double Oscar winner and renowned film director, Alexander Payne (who directed such films as “Nebraska”, “The Descendants” and “All About Schmidt”) will be the Festival’s guest of honour.
He will receive the Indie Icon Award and have a Q&A session with the Belgrade audience about his journey from an independent film to the Oscars on Saturday, September 15th, followed by a special screening of one of his films.
Indie Belgrade is organized by the Dom Omladine and Super Films Int. with the support of the City of Belgrade, the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia and the US Embassy in Belgrade.
Hristina Hadzihalalabus and Radoslav Pavkovic selected the films to be shown at the Festival while Dragan Nikolic is the editor of the Festival’s film programme.
