Higher fuel duties on petrol and diesel

The state has increased fuel duties by around 5.5 per cent, and the new rates will apply until 5 July.

The Serbian Government has increased fuel duties (excise duties) on petroleum products by around 5.5 per cent compared to the previous week, and the new amounts will apply from today, 29 June until 5 July, according to the latest decision published in the Official Gazette.

The increase applies to petrol, diesel and leaded petrol, meaning drivers will pay higher fuel duties from the very beginning of next week. Although fuel duty is not the only component that determines retail prices at filling stations, its increase could impact the final price paid by citizens.

According to the new Decision on the Temporary Reduction of Fuel Duties on Petroleum Products, the duty on unleaded petrol from 29 June will be 68.40 dinars per litre, instead of the previous 64.80. At the same time, the levy on gas oils (diesel) increases from 66.64 to 70.34 dinars per litre, while the duty on leaded petrol will be increased from 68.90 to 72.72 dinars per litre.

These changes represent a continuation of the temporary fuel duty reduction policy, which the Serbian Government introduced to mitigate the consequences of rising crude oil prices on the global market. However, as the temporary reduction is adjusted from week to week, the duty amounts are adapted to current market circumstances.

As a reminder, on 14 May, the Serbian Government made the decision to temporarily reduce fuel duties on petroleum products due to rising producer prices caused by the increasing cost of crude oil on the global market. The decision was initially valid until 7 June, then extended until 21 June, thereafter until 28 June, and has now been extended for the period from 29 June to 5 July. It remains to be seen whether the fuel duty increase will affect retail prices at petrol stations, which, besides duties, also depend on oil price trends on the global market, the dinar exchange rate, and retail margins.
