Government to provide subsidies for purchase of new taxi vehicles

In order to be eligible for state subsidies for the purchase of new taxi vehicles, taxi drivers have to fulfil several conditions, namely that their new vehicle should be white and that they have to cover some of the purchase price themselves.

No conditions were set for the price or the model of the vehicle. Furthermore, taxi drivers will be eligible to buy cars with the help of a loan or via a leasing arrangement. The subsidy will amount to several thousand euro.

The most common choice of taxi drivers is mid-range vehicles that cost between 15,000 and 17,000 euro.

Taxi drivers will also have to meet at least two conditions to receive a subsidy: the taxi company they work for must be legally registered and must not owe any money in taxes. This condition is currently applicable to between 12,000 and 13,000 taxi drivers, out of a total of 17,400.

The taxi drivers ended their protest in Belgrade two days ago after blocking the city’s centre for 12 days, following talks with President Aleksandar Vucic. Vucic said, after the meeting, that taxi drivers would receive state subsidies but did not specify what kind of subsidies they would be. He also said that the state was ready to help improve the quality of taxi service in Serbia.
