Government minister Tomislav Momirović released from house arrest

Former Minister of Internal and External Trade Tomislav Momirović spoke out via his Instagram account after being released from detention.

“After six months of prison and house arrest, I continue to respect the court’s decisions and to participate calmly in the proceedings. In time, the facts will speak for themselves. We move on,” Tomislav Momirović said in a post on his Instagram account.

The Belgrade Higher Court lifted the house arrest of former ministers Goran Vesić and Tomislav Momirović, who are suspected, together with several other individuals, of having committed corrupt criminal offences during the project “Modernisation and Reconstruction of the Hungarian–Serbian Railway Line on the Novi Sad–Subotica–State Border (Kelebija) route”.

The court stated that this decision was made bearing in mind that, under the Criminal Procedure Code, the measure prohibiting leaving one’s residence may last a maximum of six months, and if an indictment is not filed within that period, the accused must be released.

Given that six months have passed since the arrest of the suspects and that the Prosecutor’s Office for Organised Crime has not filed an indictment, the Higher Court adopted the decision by operation of law.
