The German government’s special envoy for the Western Balkans, Manuel Sarrazin, said that Germany expects Serbia to impose sanctions on Russia, as it is an EU candidate.
“This is stipulated in the Stabilization and Association Agreement, which Serbia also signed, so we want Serbia to impose sanctions on Russia. I believe that Moscow wants to destabilize the Balkans, but I am convinced that we have the opportunity not to allow such a destabilization. The Kremlin does not offer anything attractive to the citizens of the Western Balkans,” Sarrazin told RTK, as reported by Tanjug.
Asked whether Kosovo will be allowed to join NATO, the German envoy said that Berlin has recognized Kosovo as an independent and sovereign state.
“Of course, we think that Kosovo has the right to join international organizations in which it has not yet been recognized. How realistic is that it will join NATO? There are five EU members who have not yet recognized Kosovo, and who are also members of NATO, so Kosovo’s membership is still questionable. Of course, I understand very well the current situation and the threats to Kosovo, and what I can say is that we need to work more to improve Kosovo’s position on the international scene and membership in international organizations,” he added.
He refused to elaborate or define the Union of Serbian Municipalities (SZO) and the Brussels Agreement. “What is important is that both sides begin to support concrete progress in the process of normalization of relations between the two countries and, of course, that the SZO issue is just one of the topics to be discussed,” he concluded.
