Exhibition dedicated to Serbian women who changed the world

Mileva, Žanka, Anka, Milena… Who are the Serbian women who changed the world?

The stories of 20 women who transformed themselves and society despite the challenges of their time are being presented at the Jevrem Grujić House, where the exhibition “Great Women of Serbian Culture” has opened. This exhibition continues a series dedicated to remarkable women from Serbian history and culture.

The women featured in this exhibition are examples not only of dedication and perseverance but also of courage and an unwavering belief that, despite all obstacles and prejudices, anything can be achieved.

Visitors can explore the fascinating lives of Milena Pavlović Barili, Žanka Stokić, Mira Trailović, Mirka and Mabel Grujić, among many others. These include the first Serbian woman to earn a doctorate in legal sciences, Anka Gođevac Subotić; the great philanthropist Marija Trandafil, who, among other legacies, funded the Matica Srpska building; Milica Babić Jovanović, the first trained costume designer; the first female physician Draga Ljočić; and the most highly educated Serbian woman and the first female PhD holder, Ksenija Atanasijević.

The exhibition also honours queens Natalija and Draga Obrenović, Queen Marija Karađorđević, and two “Serbian Englishwomen”—Lady Paget and Flora Sandes.

The exhibition’s authors include Branka Conić, director of the Jevrem Grujić House; Dr. Gordana Bekčić, head of the Office for Cultural Diplomacy; Ružica Opačić, art historian; and Brankica Janković, Commissioner for the Protection of Equality. The exhibition was officially opened by British Ambassador Edward Ferguson and the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality.

The exhibition will be open from 14 November to 31 January 2025.
