“We have received with deep concern the extremely serious allegations of mistreatment by the Kosovo Police and, in accordance with our mandate, will closely follow the case with the relevant authorities,” EULEX said in a written response to Kosovo Online regarding the case of Nenad Rašković.
Rašković, a Serb from the village of Dren, said that Kosovo Police officers had come to his home several times in search of weapons, that one of them had beaten him inside the house, and that they subsequently took him to a wooded area, where they tied him up and beat him.
He is currently in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Kosovska Mitrovica with head, back and chest injuries, while his condition is stable, the KoSSev portal reports.
“Absolute prohibition of mistreatment”
EULEX’s response further stresses that the prohibition of any form of mistreatment is absolute and applies in all circumstances, Kosovo Online reports. “Every allegation of mistreatment must be promptly, independently and effectively investigated by the competent authorities, and those found responsible for such conduct must be held accountable,” the Mission said.
Regarding the request by the Serb List, which called on representatives of the international community, KFOR and EULEX to urgently examine all allegations concerning the incident and take measures within their respective mandates to establish all the facts and ensure the protection of citizens’ rights and security, EULEX responded that conducting criminal investigations does not fall within its mandate.
Last night, Kosovo Police and a representative of the Kosovo Police Inspectorate (PIK) took a statement from Nenad Rašković from Dren at a hospital in North Mitrovica.
Medical records were also obtained, Veton Eljšani, deputy commander of Kosovo Police for the North region, confirmed to KoSSev this morning.
