The economic sentiment in Serbia is slightly improving compared to the beginning of 2023, the EU economic sentiment indicator (ESI) shows, as published in the Centre for Advanced Economic Studies (CEVES) newsletter.
The sentiment moved from moderately negative (93) to the neutral (96).
Consumer pessimism that prevailed at the end of 2022 is slowly disappearing with the slowdown in inflation, while price capping measures in September gave additional impetus.
Expectations regarding the construction sector are better as demand has remained stable and real estate prices have followed general inflation, compared to the beginning of 2023.
The economic sentiment in the European Union is approaching the moderately negative zone after slow GDP growth in the first quarter (1.2%) and stagnation in the second quarter.
Economic development in the EU is driven by the recession in predominantly industrial economies, primarily in Germany, which has crossed the threshold of moderately negative expectations. Nevertheless, one should maintain conservative evaluation of Serbia’s short-term growth, bearing in mind that our economic trends are closely linked to those in the EU, primarily in Germany, CEVES says.
