American singer and actress Lisa Simone will perform at this year’s Nisville on 11th August, marking 85th anniversary of her mother Nina Simon’s birth who was one of the greatest jazz, soul, rhythm and blues singers of all time.
In addition to performing at the Nis Jazz Festival, the festival organizers say they are negotiating with Simone to hold not only the workshops for singers but also for actors. At Nisville, Lisa will pay tribute to her mother who was also a well-known civil rights activist, as well as her mother’s induction into the Hall of Fame.
As a singer, Lisa Simone performed at prestigious concert halls – from New York’s Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Town Hall to Sydney Opera House and Olympia in Paris – often together with top female vocalists such as Dianne Reeves, Angelique Kidjo, Odetta, Lizz Wright and Tracy Chapman.
Simone’s stage debut was in a national tour of the Andrew Lloyd Webber rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar, as Soul Sister and understudy for Mary. In 1996, she continued her career as a swing and female understudy in the original Broadway production of Rent. Later that year, Simone performed the lead role of Mimi Marquez in its first national tour, from November 1996 to April 1998.
Simone has released four solo albums: Simone Superstar, Simone on Simone, All Is Well, Lisa Simone with Tromsø Big Band, Live at the Edge and My World.
She tours frequently, singing jazz standards and her own material, most recently on tour in Europe with her 2014 album All Is Well.
