Construction workers in Belgrade worked tirelessly all day yesterday, even though weather forecasters had announced the peak of the heat wave, with temperatures even exceeding 40° Celsius.
The Public Health Institute of Serbia had urged people to stay at home during the hottest time of the day, and the Association of Independent Trade Unions of Serbia (SSSS) had urged employers to allow workers to take a break from 11 am to 4 pm.
It was 34 degrees before noon in Belgrade yesterday. Still, the construction workers at Novi Beograd’s construction sites were working hard, as if temperatures were much lower, some even without a regular supply of water, which they usually had to get themselves. Many were protecting themselves from the strong sun with long trousers and long-sleeved shirts, others with cotton shirts worn under their helmets to prevent their necks from burning.
