Dedinje Cardiovascular Institute first in Europe in number of performed open heart surgeries

The Dedinje Cardiovascular Institute from Belgrade ranked first in Europe last year, having performed close to 2,500 open heart surgeries, Brainz TV reported on Wednesday.

Institute chief Professor Milovan Bojic, MD, said that doctors at the Institute, in its entire history, has never performed more open heart surgeries successfully than last year.

“We performed more than 2,500 open-heart surgeries last year which definitely places us in first place in Europe since similar hospitals operate also on children. We only perform surgery on adults,” he said adding that there isn’t any cardio surgery procedure which is not being done at the Institute.

He added that 16 procedures, new in both Serbia and the region, had been implemented as well.

Despite the aforementioned success, the Institute’s doctors currently work in rather cramped operating theatres and inadequate conditions. Two years ago, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced the possibility of the construction of a new facility called Dedinje 2. However, that has not materialized as yet.
