Council of the European Union: Serbia needs to boost rule of the law

In conclusions adopted on Tuesday, the Council of the European Union commended Serbia’s progress in the EU accession talks and economic reforms but urged greater efficiency in the rule of law reform and the alignment with the EU’s visa and foreign policies.

Serbia was also praised for “constructive engagement in regional cooperation.”

The day after Serbia opened two new chapters in the accession negotiations, the ministers recalled that progress in the rule of law and the normalization of relations with Pristina will determine the pace of further negotiations, Radio and Television of Serbia  reports.

In terms of the dialogue with the official Pristina, the Council urges for the Agreement on the Community of Serb Municipalities to be implemented without further delay.

The Council has also praised Serbia for its economic growth, but underlines that the country need to work more on the rule of law.

“Serbia must urgently speed up reforms, especially in the area of the rule of law. It is important to complete constitutional changes in line with the recommendations of the Venice Commission, “said European Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn.

“Serbia needs to respond to the challenges in the judiciary and freedom of expression, and we have been assured that this is the case”, Hahn added.
