Two and a half months ago, in a big ceremony held near Merošina (Central Serbia), Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić officially inaugurated the construction of the Niš-Priština motorway. Today, the construction site seems abandoned and there is no trace of workers or machinery.
In the first days of December, the beginning of the construction of the E80 highway (Niš-Merdare stretch) was pompously announced, and on the occasion, Vučić spoke about the construction of the first section from Niš to Beloljin. The same thing happened the following days, when the works on the Niš-Pločnik section were officially inaugurated. Both construction sites are empty and there is no activity on them.
Two and a half months ago, Vučić also thanked the EU by giving Serbia EUR 40 million that was supposed to be used for the construction of these motorway sections. Today, there is nothing but a parking lot on the supposed construction site and a billboard that contains rules of behaviour on the site.
The deadline for completion of the construction on the first motorway section is 2026.
