Construction of one of the largest solar power plants in Europe to begin in Serbia

At the beginning of 2026, the Noćaj 1 solar power plant project near Sremska Mitrovica officially entered the phase of concrete implementation, following the signing of an EPC contract for the construction of one of the largest solar power plants in Serbia.

The information was published in an official stock exchange announcement by the Turkish company Kontrolmatik, which signed the contract with the project investor, Fortis Renewable Energy BV. The contract covers the design, procurement and construction of a solar power plant with an installed capacity of 90 MW, as well as the integration of a battery energy storage system with a capacity of 36 MWh.

The Noćaj 1 project is also ranked among the most significant current investments in the field of renewable energy sources in Serbia, with particular importance for the development of electricity storage systems.

The project also includes the delivery of a battery energy storage system, which will be carried out by Pomega Enerji Depolama Teknoloji A.S, a company specialised in energy storage technologies and a member of the Kontrolmatik Group.

The Noćaj 1 project fits into Fortis’s previously announced solar portfolio with a total capacity of around 270 MW, which also includes the Noćaj 2 solar power plant.

Fortis Energy, a company headquartered in the Netherlands, acquired a 180 MW solar project with a battery energy storage system (BESS) in Sremska Mitrovica in the summer of 2024.

The company stated that this is expected to be one of the largest solar power plants and energy storage systems in south-eastern Europe, with a storage capacity of 36 MWh.

In September last year, it was announced that Fortis would begin construction of the solar power plant in Sremska Mitrovica in the spring, on privately owned land on the Mačva side, on the road towards Drenovac, for which a building permit has already been obtained.

The Mayor of Sremska Mitrovica, Branislav Nedimović, stated that the solar park would be built on 300 hectares of privately owned land in Mačva and would have an installed capacity of 270 megawatts, which is as much as one-fifth of the installed capacity of the Đerdap hydropower plant.

“Therefore, we can say that this will be one of the five largest projects of this kind in Europe,” Nedimović said.

In May, Fortis signed a contract for the grid connection of the planned Erdevik solar park in the municipality of Šid, which borders Sremska Mitrovica. The planned installed capacity is 110 MW, with a BESS system with a capacity of 31.2 MWh.

In Serbia, the company is already developing three wind power projects in Jagodina, Petrovac and Vranje, with a total capacity of 481 MW, and also owns five biogas plants with a total capacity of 21 MW.
