Clinical Centre of Serbia gets its first X-knife

RSD 800 million was invested in construction of the X-Knife Centre at CCS and in procurement of equipment, Tanjug reports. Advantage of the X-knife is that it is very precise, and damage to the spinal cord during interventions on the spine can be avoided by using this knife. Also, the machine can be used on 5-6 centimetres large tumours on all locations

Clinical Centre of Serbia, which got its first X-knife, was visited by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on Sunday (July 22, 2018), where he announced more investments in health institutions. Serbia allocates 20% of its budget to health sector, he said.

The President announced that the second X-knife should arrive already on August 1, and he said that this will mean great savings. Vučić said that a contract on reconstruction of the entire Clinical Centre should be signed soon, and that, just like Niš got a modern medical centre, the same will happen in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Kragujevac.
Complete reconstruction will cost EUR 69 million, as he pointed out, and he expects this contract to be signed next week.

Vučić also visited works on reconstruction of the façade, repair of the roof, replacement of some windows and adaptation of attic space on the Emergency Centre building. These works started on May 24, and they will be completed by October 22.

Minister of Health Zlatibor Lončar and Minister of Interior Nebojša Stefanović accompanied Vučić during this visit.

What is an X-knife

This machine can administer a larger dose of radiation than with classic radiotherapy, so radiation period can be shortened from three or four weeks to only one.

The X-knife allows for more precise radiation of the tumour itself, saving the healthy tissue that regular linear accelerators cannot achieve. It also allows a placement of a larger daily dose, which increases efficiency of the radiation itself, reduces the number of hospital days by five to six times, allows for precision control based on a scanner and not an ordinary x-ray image, and control can be carried out even during radiation itself.

The X-knife allows for a larger number of patients to be treated during one day with equal or greater precision than any other machine for stereotactic radiosurgery of the entire body.

It improves the quality of life of patients getting radiotherapy treatment, and provides precise radiation of tumours that are too large for a gamma knife.
