On the occasion, Mihajlovic underlined that Belgrade was the only city in Europe that did not have a wastewater treatment system, and that the project was of utmost importance because it would significantly improve the quality of life of Belgrade’s citizens.
“This is a capital project that everyone has to be involved in, as long as the Chinese company negotiates with the Ministry of Finance the financing conditions. The first construction phase will cost around EUR 271 million to complete,” Mihajlovic added.
Mihajlovic pointed out that 190 million cubic meters of wastewater end up in the Sava and the Danube, which is equivalent of 60,000 Olympic-size swimming pools or 19 million water tanks.
“But we are not stopping here. Through the new investment plan Serbia 2025, we have allocated one billion euro that we will invest in other cities and municipalities in Serbia that have similar problems,” Mihajlovic concluded.
Deputy Mayor of Belgrade, Goran Vesic stated that 1/3 of Belgrade has no sewage system.
“With the construction of this facility, 80% of wastewater discharges to the Sava and the Danube will be eliminated. The new wastewater plant will serve 1.5 million citizens,” Vesic added.
