Chinese HBIS starts building a new production facility at Smederevo steel mill

HBIS Group Serbia Iron & Steel, a unit of China’s HBIS, has launched a 108-million-euro project for the construction of a new sinter plant at the Zelezara Smederevo steel mill, the office of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Wednesday.

The project will become a milestone in the efforts of HBIS to build a high-end steel company in Europe and will make Zelezara Smederevo a green, smart and energy-efficient steel mill, the director of the Serbian unit of the company, quoted the president’s office director of HBIS Group Serbia, Lianxi Wang, said in a press release.

“Zelezara was a factory that only brought losses and problems but now has become the largest exporter in Serbia. I am sure that when the political conditions in the world improve, Zelezara will be even bigger and stronger,” Vucic said at the groundbreaking ceremony the new plant.

The conditions in which Zelezara Smederevo operates are difficult due to the planned restrictions on steel imports into the EU, but the construction of the sinter plant shows that HBIS remains committed to the steel mill, Vucic added.

The Chinese steelmaker plans to invest $300 million in Zelezara Smederevo by the end of 2021, the Serbian president’s office said earlier this month. The company was Serbia’s largest exporter in the first five months of 2019.

HBIS took over the management and ownership of Zelezara Smederevo in July 2016, three months after the government agreed to sell the steel mill to the Chinese group for 46 million euro.

Železara employs over 5,000 people. Last year, it hired 269 young, while 501 employees got long-term job contracts.
