Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, arrived in Belgrade today, where he met Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić.
The official from China was previously welcomed at Nikola Tesla airport by his Serbian counterpart, Nikola Selaković. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic will meet him today at the Palace of Serbia.
Brnabić expressed her gratitude for the help that China provided to Serbia during the coronavirus pandemic in the shape of professional medical assistance, equipment and support for vaccination.
This, Brnabić added, has only strengthened the ironclad friendship between the two countries, which is developing even further with the Chinese company, Sinopharm, construction a coronavirus vaccine in Serbia.
She also underlined the importance of cooperation with China in infrastructure development and new large investments of Chinese companies in Serbia, despite the continuing pandemic, noting that the implementation of most projects is proceeding at an agreed pace, meeting the contractual deadlines.
The Serbian PM expressed particular gratitude for the successful privatisation of Smederevo Ironworks (Železara Smederevo) thanks to which, she underlined, thousands of jobs have been saved, as well as the Chinese becoming the strategic partner of RTB Bor.
Serbia also attaches great importance to and provides strong support for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s global ‘Belt and Road’ initiative and the China-CEEC cooperation mechanism. “Our ambition for further development of political, economic and all other relations is great,” Brnabić said and congratulated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party.
Wang Yi highlighted that the friendship between the two countries has been developing to the benefit of both peoples. He added that China will continue being Serbia’s friend, which is why official Belgrade can fully count on help from China in all matters.
Wang Yi also said that there is still room for enhancing the cooperation, especially when it comes to trade, and since he knows how personally committed the Serbian PM is to the development of digitalization and innovation, China is fully at Serbia’s disposal in that segment as well.
