Brnabic:”Weekend curfew extended because people are more active during weekends”

“The weekend curfew, from Friday at 5 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m., was introduced because weekends are the days when there are a lot of people around and there is lower adherence to self-isolation measures,” said Prime Minister Ana Brnabic.

She also said that social contacts during the weekend should be kept to a minimum and, since this is not the case, there is a price to pay.

“We are entering week six and expect the epidemic to peak this weekend. It seems to me that we are doing better in terms of adhering to the restrictive measures. However, weekends are really the most devastating. You see people cycling, jogging, walking in groups, and when you know they will be next to be infected you have to introduce a tighter curfew. I really don’t know how bad someone can get if they don’t go jogging for two weeks,” Brnabic told the Prva TV.

According to her, the healthcare system is “over-stressed” and the reason is that patients with COVID-19 require longer treatment.

“All the facilities in Belgrade and Nis are completely full. We have a plan for the hospitals in Pančevo and Batajnica to use them only for COVID patients,” said Brnabic.

“If people don’t respect the rules, it could be the final blow to our health care system, which in the end will “burst”, as it has happened all over Europe and even in America,” she said.

“The experts want to introduce a 24-hour-curfew, but we are currently against it. President Aleksandar Vucic said there might be other steps to take. We are considering some of them, such as the isolation of Belgrade, Valjevo and Cuprija which are the hotbeds of the infection,” the PM added.
