After the inter-governmental conference in Luxembourg, Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said on Tuesday, that Serbia had opened cluster 1 on fundamental rights in accession negotiations with the European Union.
„It’s clear what we have to do. The positive thing is that cluster 1, the most important cluster under the new methodology, was opened. Serbia is also clear what it has to do to open clusters 3 and 4,“ Brnabic told reporters after the conference.
Cluster 1, or Fundamentals, consists of the judiciary and fundamental rights, justice, freedom and security, economic criteria, functioning of democratic institutions, public administration reform, public procurement, statistics and financial control.
The previous announcements suggested that no chapter or cluster, according to the EU new methodology, would be opened during the inter-governmental conference in Luxembourg.
Brnabic also said Serbia had met all requirements needed for the opening of cluster 3 (Competitiveness and inclusive growth) and cluster 4 (Green agenda and sustainable connectivity), adding that she hoped they would be opened during Slovenia’s presidency over the EU later this year.
„We heard from many member states that they would support us. I can guarantee you that the progress achieved so far would continue,“ she said after the inter-governmental conference.
The EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, tweeted that the EU had to continue accelerating the enlargement process during the Slovenian presidency and that Serbia has done excellent work on clusters 3 and 4.
