Borrell: Agreement has been reached

Josep Borell, the head of EU diplomacy, stated that Serbia will stop issuing license plates bearing the markings of Kosovo towns and that Kosovo will suspend further actions related to the re-registration of vehicles that have Serbian number plates.

“We have a deal! Very pleased to announce that chief negotiators of Kosovo and Serbia under EU’s facilitation have agreed on measures to avoid further escalation and to fully concentrate on the proposal on normalization of their relations,” Borrell wrote on Twitter.

He thanked EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, for his “hard work” and said he will invite the parties in the coming days to discuss next steps.

Borrell said he and Lajcak will continue to facilitate the process of normalization of relations and update the EU Member States and partners regularly about the progress achieved by the Parties..

Kosovar negotiator Besnik Bislimi said that, following the agreement reached Wednesday evening, “we should continue our intensive talks on the EU’s proposal of the EU, backed by Germany and France, for full normalization of relations”.

Representatives of the Serbs decided to leave their positions in Kosovo institutions on November 5, after the Kosovo government issued warnings and announced fines for all those who do not want to change the Serbian license plates for plates bearing the markings of the Republic of Kosovo.

The Serbian government’s Office for Kosovo and Metohija has said that Prišina has accepted everything they refused in the previous days and added that the reached agreement is an indication that the US government wanted to ease tensions in Kosovo and was working in that direction.

Kosovo President, Vjosa Osmani, commented on the deal in her Twitter post:”I want to thank the US Ambassador in Kosovo, Jeff Hovenier and the US government for their active engagement in reaching today’s deal in Brussels. Their support for the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia is indispensable. Kosovo is grateful.”
