BITEF theatre festival starts on 22nd September

German theatre will be in focus of this year’s theatre festival BITEF which will take place from 22nd to 30th September in Belgrade.

This was said at a press conference, attended by the Swiss Ambassador to Serbia, Philippe Guex, the German Ambassador, Axel Dittmann, the director of the Goethe Institute, Frank Baumann, and BITEF’s Art Director, Ivan Medenica.

Medenica said that Jan Fabre’s Mount Olympus will officially open BITEF. The peculiarity of this play is that there will be no actors on the stage, and the audiences will hear only the actors’ voices.

A total of seven plays will be staged during this year’s BITEF which slogan is „The Epic Trip“.

On 22nd September, the audiences will be able to see a six-hour long play from Great Britain called Quizilla which is directed by Tim Elitches. On the same day, Jan Fabre will stage its Mount Olympus, an epic 24-hour-play.

Medenica also says that this year’s BITEF will focus on plays from mainly the German speaking area, and the audiences will be able to see two plays by the German theatre’s rising star, Ersan Mondtag. Medenica adds that many theatre directors from abroad have come to Belgrade solely to watch two of Mondtag’s plays – “Snow” performed by Thalia Theater from Hamburg and based on the book by Orhan Pamuk, and “The Extermination” performed by Konzert Theater from Bern.

Mondtag is known for its radical, cynical and political approach to theatre. Slovenian theatre director, Jernej Lorenci will stage two plays at the BITEF – “The Bible, First Attempt” performed by Slovensko Narodno Gledališče from Ljubljana, and “The Kingdom of Heaven”, a co-production of the Belgrade National Theatre and BITEF Theatre. Also, there is a play by the Iranian director, Amir Reza Koohestani called “Hearing”.
