Best films from Sundance to premiere at Beldocs

The 10th international documentary film festival Beldocs will take place in Belgrade, between 8th and 15th May this year. The festival’s programme includes five documentary films that have been recently screened and awarded at the famous Sundance Film Festival in Utah.

One of those films is Last Men in Aleppo, directed by Feras Fayyad, won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize. The film is co-produced by Danish and Syrian producers, and it follows three volunteers in the destroyed Syrian town of Aleppo searching the ruins for people, both dead and alive.

Another feature documentary that is coming to Beldocs which recently garnered the Sundance Jury Award for Excellence in Cinematography, is Machines, directed by Rahul Jain. This is an exciting documentary that explores the relation between workers, machines and industrialization and talks about many faceless migrants that work up to 12 hours a day in Indian textile factories just to survive.

One more documentary definitely worth seeing is The Good Postman, directed by Tomislav Hristov. Variety magazine says that this is “a sad, searing and profoundly empathetic study of electoral process in a minute Bulgarian village split by opposing responses to the Syrian refugee crisis”,

Irish documentary filmmaker Frankie Fenton brings us It’s Not Yet Dark, a moving story about film director Simon Fitzmaurice who, after experiencing a great success with his short film The Sound of People at the 2008 Sundance Festival, fell gravely ill and was given only four years to live. Actor Colin Farrell narrates the film.

The Japanese film director Kyoko Miyake brings us a documentary called Tokyo Idols that provides a fascinating insight into the local girlband and their music, as well as the girls’ obsession with sexuality and online popularity.

Beldocs will take place between 8th and 15th May at several different locations in Belgrade, and will showcase a total of 80 documentary films.
