The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as Shanghai Ranking, for 2018, places the University of Belgrade between the 301st and the 400th spot, as per the organization’s website.
Last year, the Belgrade University was in the 201-300 group.
The Shanghai list, originally published by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is one of the most influential lists ranking the world’s universities.

Among other things, the criteria include the number of Nobel laureates & Fields Medalists attending or working at the university and the number and quality of papers published.
China and the US are the biggest gainers in the 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities, released on 15th August, with respectively six and four more universities in the top 500, but there is no movement at the very top with Harvard leading for the 16th year running.
In fact the entire top 10 remains unchanged and there is barely a flicker of movement in the top 20, which saw no new entries and just three universities changed places.
Stanford University remains second; Cambridge third; followed by MIT, University of California, Berkeley; Princeton; Oxford; Columbia; Caltech and Chicago in the same order as last year.
Universities from the United States dominate this year’s Top 500 list with eight universities among the Top 10, 46 among the Top 100 and 139 among the Top 500.
China has 62 universities ranked in Top 500, among which three are in the Top 100. The United Kingdom has 39 Top 500 universities, with eight in Top 100.
