Serbia’s capital will welcome the athletes from over 200 countries from March 11 – 13 2022, following successful organization of the European Cross Championships in 2013 and the European Athletic Indoor Championships in 2017.
The decision for Belgrade to host the 2022 World Indoor Athletics Championship was made after Serbia’s seven-people-strong delegation presented Belgrade as a candidate in Monaco, at the IAAF Council’s meeting.
“Following the successful organization of the European Indoor Championship in March 2017, the next logical step in the development of athletics in Serbia is hosting the World Championship. We are going to support the organization of this competition within the scope of our skills and abilities, also thanks to the financial contribution of 2 million euro from the budget of the World Indoor Athletics Championship which will be held in Belgrade at the Stark Arena,” said Goran Vesic, Deputy Mayor of Belgrade.
This competition will be one of the biggest ever in Serbia as far as athletics is concerned. More than 1,000 athletes from at least 200 countries are expected to participate. This type of event is generally reported by thousands of media outlets and watched by tens of millions of spectators on live TV.
