Belgrade supports UN resolution condemning Russia for annexations in Ukraine

Yesterday evening, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution condemning Russia for its decision to annex four Ukrainian regions by a large majority (including Serbia) on the basis of the results of the referendum, which took place under wartime conditions and without the presence of the refugee population.

143 countries voted in favour of the resolution proposed by Western countries, which declares the annexation of the regions of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Lugansk illegal. Five countries were against and 35 abstained from voting. Serbia is among the countries that supported the resolution, reports Beta news agency.

North Korea, Belarus, Nicaragua, Syria and Russia voted against the resolution. Among the countries that abstained from voting were China, India, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Cuba and several African countries, including South Africa.

In his tweet, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, called the resolution ‘historic’ and thanked the countries that supported it. The resolution calls on Moscow to immediately abandon annexations and withdraw troops to territory within Russia’s internationally recognised borders. This is the fourth UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine.
