Belgrade-Subotica high-speed railroad to be open in December this year

The construction of the Novi Sad-Subotica high-speed railroad is progressing faster than planned, according to the contractors. They predict that regular railway traffic between Belgrade and the northernmost city in Serbia could be established as early as December this year.

More than seven million passengers used the Soko high-speed train for their commuting from Novi Sad to Belgrade and vice versa since its launch in 2022.

The construction of the Novi Sad-Subotica railroad which will allow speeds of up to 200km/h is going according to the schedule, and the workers are working around the clock, in three shifts.

“98 percent of the lower railway segments and 67 percent of upper railway segments have already been completed. There is also work to be done on the electrification of the railway, the installation of the train line and construction of the station buildings and related facilities” says Slobodan Kostić, engineer engaged on the project.

If everything goes according to plan, regular railway traffic could be established as early as December this year. Once the railroad is open, commuting between Novi Sad and Subotica would last 42 minutes and from Belgrade to Subotica about 70 minutes.

“The plan is for testing to be done in September, while the railroad should be completed in terms of construction even before that. We are going to use specialized trains to test the railroad and the quality of the work performed”, says Nenad Stanisavljević from the Railway Infrastructure of Serbia Company.

The Belgrade-Subotica railroad is part of the Belgrade-Budapest railroad project, which in turn, is being implemented under the auspices of China’s Belt and Road initiative to connect the Greek port of Piraeus with the European Union by rail. Out of a total of 350 kilometres of that railroad, 184 kilometres are being built in Serbia and 166km in Hungary.
