More than 60 kilometres of Novi Sad-Subotica railroad are near completion with workers working in three shifts.
As announced by the contractors, construction should be finished at the end of next year, almost a year ahead of schedule. The fact that in 2021, 2.1 million people traveled by train in Serbia, and just two years later, after the opening of the Novi Sad-Belgrade railway, the number of passengers tripled, shows how significant the modernization of the railway network is.
Between 1,000 to 1,250 metres of rails are installed every day, in addition to 120 (out of 287) railroad switches.
The high-speed railway from Belgrade to Budapest is the most important project under the auspices of the Belt and Road initiative. The contractor is a consortium of Chinese companies and the railway will be electrified and equipped with state-of-the-art signaling and safety devices. There will be no road crossings on the entire section of the Belgrade-Novi Sad-Subotica-Kelebija high-speed railway.
Once the Belgrade-Novi Sad-Subotica-Kelebija section is constructed, it will be connected to the 152-kilometre-long railroad in Hungary, which is expected to be finished by the end of 2025.
