Belgrade government didn’t build any of the five planned wastewater treatment plants, while at the same time, large spills of untreated water are constantly being released into the Sava and Danube Rivers, city waterways and melioration canals.
The facilities (tunnels, collectors, pumping stations, retentions). which construction was foreseen in the General Solution Plan for the Belgrade Sewerage (dating back from 1977), were not built and most of the retentions that were planned at that time it is now impossible to do, because of both planned and unplanned urbanization which took place in Belgrade in the meantime.
These are some of the main problems identified by the Belgrade Sewerage System (BSS), in the Strategy for Maintenance of Watercourses of the Second Order in the Territory of Belgrade, drafted by the Jaroslav Černi Water Management Institute and the Environmental Protection Secretariat. The Belgrade Sewerage System (BSS) covers an area of about 15,000 hectares and includes the area of Belgrade and Zemun and some neighbourhoods on the left bank of the Danube.
More than 1,200,000 Belgrade residents are connected to the sewage grid which runs through a dozen city municipalities. However, a large number of residents use their own septic tanks. Atmospheric, used wastewater and industrial water and some of drainage and stream water are all evacuated through the sewerage and mostly released into the city’s waterways.
