The BELDOCS International Documentary Film Festival, which will be held for the 19th time from 20 to 26 May in the capital, will be officially opened by the film Yugo Goes to America, the feature-length directorial debut of Filip Grujić and Aleksa Borković, according to a statement from Beldocs.
Through the form of a documentary comedy with elements of a travelogue, the film thoughtfully and wittily reflects on the legacy of a bygone era, revealing its unpredictable echoes and new meanings in a contemporary social context.
Yugo Goes to America follows a group of young friends from Serbia who set off on a journey from New York to Los Angeles in the legendary Yugo, the iconic car of the 1980s. From a symbol of industrial pride, to an object of ridicule, and finally to a reborn and unexpected object of nostalgia, the Yugo appears to be an inseparable part of the Balkan ethos. Through a series of unpredictable encounters and situations along the way, the film unfolds as a warm story about a clash of cultures, as well as the universal need for human connection.
The film will have its regional premiere at the BELDOCS festival. More information about this and other films to be screened at the 19th International Documentary Film Festival BELDOCS can be found on the festival’s website, where tickets for all screenings will be available for purchase later this month.
