Average salaries in countries of ex-Yugoslavia – How does Serbia fare?

The average net salary in the countries of the former Yugoslavia in December 2023 was the highest in Slovenia (1,530 euros), and the lowest in North Macedonia (649 euros).

In second place is Croatia (1,191 euros), followed by Montenegro (814 euros), then Serbia (811.3 euros), and Bosnia and Herzegovina (with 654 euros) ahead of North Macedonia.

Slovenia – 1,530 euros

The average net salary in December 2023 in Slovenia amounted to 1,529.86 euros and was nominally four percent lower than the salary in November and 3.5 percent lower in real terms. The average gross salary in December 2023 is 2,348.32 euros.

Croatia – 1,191 euros

The average monthly net salary in Croatia in December 2023 was 1,191 euros, which is nominally lower by 1.4 percent and in real terms by 0.9 percent compared to November 2023, according to the data of the Croatian State Statistics Office. Compared to the same month of the previous year, it is nominally higher by 13.9 percent, and in real terms by 9 percent.

Montenegro – 814 euros

The average net salary in Montenegro in December 2023 was 814 euros, while the gross salary stood at 1,018 euros. The average (net) salary in December 2023 compared to November 2023 grew by 0.9 percent and compared to the same month of the previous year, by 12 percent.

Serbia – 811.3 euros

The average gross salary in December 2023 was 1,112.6 euros, while the average net salary stood at 811.3 euros. The growth of gross and net wages in the period January-December 2023, compared to the same period last year, amounted to 14.8 percent in nominal terms and 2.4 percent in real terms.

Bosnia and Herzegovina – 654 euros

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the average net salary in December 2023 was 653.73 euros, while the gross one was close to 1,010 euros, which shows a nominal drop of 0.5 percent, and a real drop of 0.3 percent compared to the previous month. Compared to December 2022, the average salary is nominally higher by 9 percent.

North Macedonia – 649 euros

The average monthly net salary in December 2023 stood at 649.12 euros. It is 16.4 percent higher compared to December 2022, statistics show.
