Auctions for 5G this year

The Serbian Information and Telecommunications Minister, Mihailo Jovanović, has confirmed that the biggest cities in Serbia will have the 5G network available, particularly in locations frequented by tourists and along motorways.

He added that the Ministry projects that the whole country will be covered by a 5G network by 2029, the Vecernje Novosti daily reports. He believes that the auction, which will be organized by the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Postal Services (RATEL), will be held by the year-end, following which the installation of the 5G stations will commence.

Jovanović also noted that the main prerequisite for the process to take place was already met, and that is for the National Parliament to pass the Law on Telecommunications. What remains to be done is for the new Serbian government to adopt the prepared Regulation on the 5G Auction.

“The regulation stipulates how many permits will be allocated, the 5G coverage and the fees that the mobile operators have to pay”, said the minister.

He also said that the existing base stations would be upgraded and that certain operators have already bought 5G-ready stations.
