As of today meat produced in Serbia will bear a special label

As of today, in all stores in Serbia, meat and products containing more than 50% meat of domestic origin will be bear a special label, “Country of Origin: Serbia”, according to the new Regulation on the declaration, labelling and advertising of food of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The new label will be displayed in a visible place, next to the displayed meat and meat products, and must be at least the same size as the price label, it is reported on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Ministry of Agriculture has decided on this measure to further encourage local meat production, following a proposal that came from farmers.

Thanks to this measure, consumers will have clear information of the origin of the products they buy and will know which store sells local products which is a way to promote the quality of domestic products.

The Ministry of Agriculture expects that this measure will have a positive effect on domestic meat production in the long run. The provisions of the Regulation on the declaration, labelling and advertising of food specify that the label of geographical origin – “Country of origin: Serbia” – can be used to mark beef, pork, sheep, goat and poultry (fresh, chilled or frozen).
