Another round of failed negotiations between Vucic and Kurti

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that the negotiations between the Belgrade and Pristina delegations held Thursday in Brussels ended in failure because Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti refused to accept the European Union’s (EU) compromise proposal.

“We had talks and I think they ended in failure in terms of finding a clear path to normalization of relations. We all have our proposals, finally, Serbia accepted the European Union’s compromise proposal. Kurti refused to accept it and the meeting ended,” said Vucic.

The President said there were quite a few unpleasant situations during the meeting.

“That is logical. Everyone fights for what they want. It is clear that Kurti is avoiding the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities,” Vucic added.

He said Serbia does not shun its obligations and that Serbia and the EU said what course things should take.

“We even accepted that proposal of theirs, despite it not being the least bit easy for us, while Kurti refused,” said Vucic.

He explained that, under the proposal, talks on the Community of Serb Municipalities and whether there is a credible process regarding its formation would first be held.

“If we found that it was credible, we would start meeting our obligations. However, the other party did not accept this,” reiterated the President.

Also discussed at the meeting was the situation in northern Kosovo, and the issues of illegal expropriation and eviction of Serbs from Kosovo’s institutions and their workplaces.

Vucic and Kurti travelled to Brussels on Thursday for talks within the EU-facilitated Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue. They first had separate meetings with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and EU Special Envoy for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue Miroslav Lajcak, which were followed by a trilateral meeting.
