Afro Festival in Belgrade

The traditional Afro Festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 29 and 30, at the Museum of African Art in Belgrade (14 Andre Nikolić, Senjak).

For over two decades, the Afro Festival has been bringing together the museum and the public to support the preservation of cultural heritage through educational and popular programmes, as well as the promotion of African arts and crafts.

With the invaluable support of the African diplomatic community in Belgrade, specially arranged stands will showcase the diverse cultural, tourist, and gastronomic treasures of Africa. This year, the participating embassies include Algeria, Angola, Brazil, Egypt, DR Congo, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Somalia, and Tunisia, along with the consulates of Gabon, Jamaica, and Namibia.

The festival’s programme will include, among other things, an African bazaar, an exhibition of the artwork from the 9th Children’s Art Contest “Impressions of Africa,” a fashion show featuring Nigerian designers, and a workshop where women can learn various techniques for tying African headwraps. For children, there will be hip-hop dance workshops, creating collage scenery from imagined or real journeys to Africa, and painting with motifs inspired by ukara fabrics from Nigeria and Cameroon. The visitors will also be able to play a game of mancala, one of the oldest board games, and try the martial art Capoeira Angola.

The musical part of the festival will feature DJ Pen, a multidisciplinary artist from Nigeria, as well as Nego Zamba, alias José Delson do Nascimento, a popular Brazilian guitarist and improviser. Percussionists from the Singidundun School will perform on the dundun, djembe, and sabar drums.
