Statistics show that every fourth marriage (almost 10,000 marriages a year) in Serbia ends in divorce in the first few years and the most cited reasons are irreconcilable differences.
In 2022, the number of divorces in Serbia increased compared to the previous year, more precisely 9,813 marriages were divorced, i.e. a 0.2% increase, while the average duration of marriage is 13.8 years.
The average age of a divorcing husband is 45.1 and the average age of a divorcing wife is 41.5, according to data from the Serbian Statistics Office.
“Studies have shown that divorce is the second most stressful event that can happen to a person and that even going to prison is less stressful than going through a divorce, especially when the divorce is acrimonious”, lawyer Tijana Vladisavljević says.
According to the relevant statistics, the largest number of divorced marriages are the ones with children (52.5%). After the divorce, the mother usually gets custody.
Statistics have also shown that men and women are getting married at a later age, but also divorce later. The age difference between spouses is slightly more than three years on average and men are usually older than women.
Marriages mostly break down in Vojvodina and least in Western Serbia.
