A new minimum wage of 40,000 dinars would be acceptable to employers

“State increasing the minimum wage in 2023 by 14.3 per cent, to 40,020 dinars, by reducing the taxable base and payroll contributions, is acceptable to employers,” said Honorary President of the Employers’ Union of Serbia, Nebojša Atanacković.

“The government’s latest offer to raise the minimum wage by 14.3 per cent and increase the non-taxable base from 19,300 to 21,712 dinars, as well as to reduce the payroll contribution that goes toward the Pension and Disability Insurance Fund (PIO) by 1 per cent is acceptable to employers,” Atanackovic told the Beta news agency.

He added that the state offered a 14.3% increase, instead of 14%, so that the minimum wage will be 40,020 dinars for an average of 174 hours of work per month.

The demands of the representative trade unions, the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Serbia (SSSS) and the Nezavisnost Union of Branch Trade Unions, which are demanding a 25% increase in the minimum wage, which is ‘unacceptable for companies’, remain to be harmonised, he said.

The president of Nezavisnost, Čedanka Andrić, said that the negotiating position is to demand a minimum increase of 25 per cent.

“A 25 per cent increase would cover the minimum consumer basket. We started with the figure of around 43,000 dinars (the cost of the minimum consumer basket), as three years ago it was agreed that the ‘minimum’ would be equal to the value of the minimum consumption basket within two years. However, the decision on this was postponed to last year due to the coronavirus pandemic,” Andric said, specifying that the working group set up for the minimum wage negotiations had completed its work and that the increase would be discussed at the next meeting of the Social and Economic Council, scheduled for 13 September.
