A big exhibition of the most iconic Italian comic books

An important thematic exhibition titled “Comics Made in Italy – Generations” will open on Thursday, 19 March at 6 pm at the Museum of Yugoslavia.

Dedicated to Italian comics, the exhibition, curated by Gianni Bono and Giovanni Russo, presents and analyses its development, influence, and the contributions of key figures across all phases, from its origins to the present day, through a multilayered approach.

Particularly popular and highly regarded in Serbia and across the Balkans, Italian comic production is explored through the narratives of major creators from the past, present, and future. Visitors will be able to trace the history of the main works and magazines that shaped the evolution of Italian comics, and through additional content and meetings, they will engage with publishers who currently bring Italian works to Serbian readers.

The exhibition is divided into several thematic sections: Authors; History; Banners; Casa Comics; Serbian Publishers.

Thematic sections

The first section begins with an overview of Yugoslav and Serbian comic authors whose work is especially recognised in Italy (Sergej Solovjev, Branislav Kerac, and Aleksandar Zograf), followed by presentations of three young Italian authors considered among the most important contemporary creators in this medium (Giuseppe Palumbo, Sergio Algozino, and Grazia La Padula). The second section is dedicated to the history of Italian comics, exploring their formats, authors, and the stories that have passionately engaged generations of readers.

The third section examines the present, as well as famous characters and unforgettable stories reimagined from a modern perspective – visitors will have the opportunity to view large banners showing how contemporary authors pay tribute to the classics through their adaptations, allowing new readers to discover these timeless adventures. The Casa Comics section analyses critical magazines and the contribution of intellectuals to the transformation of comics, while the final section offers closer engagement and interaction with representatives from Politikin Zabavnik and publishing houses such as Grafart, Golconda, Phoenix Press, Forma B, Čarobna knjiga, and Darkwood.

Additional content and curiosities will be accessible to visitors via QR codes placed throughout the exhibition space, and meetings with authors and publishers, screenings, and workshops with comic schools will also be organised. The “Comics Made in Italy – Generations” event, organised by Lucca Crea, the magazine Fumo di China, and the Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrade, with the support of the Italian Embassy in Belgrade, is the starting point for a broader project dedicated to the history and promotion of comics. It stems from a love of a medium that, from its beginnings to today, has remained a meeting point and bridge between different cultures.

The exhibition can be visited until 30 June 2026, every day except Monday, from 10 am to 6 pm.
