50th anniversary of the legendary Yugoslav film ‘Valter Brani Sarajevo’

“The ‘Valter Brani Sarajevo’ film, starring Bata Živojinović in the main role, is the best partisan western that has the magic of a great war spectacle and one of the few films that still arouses so much attention decades after its release,” said guests at last night’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of film director Hajrudin Krvavac’s work.

The only remaining cast member Igor Galo, musician and writer Nele Karajlić, former Yugoslav Film Archive’s director, Radoslav Zelenović and film ambassador Božidar Zečević, spoke about Valter, which premiered half a century ago in Sarajevo’s Skenderija movie theatre. It is estimated that some 11 billion people in Yugoslavia, China and the rest of the world have seen the film.

The event, held at the Valter restaurant at the Galerija Shopping Centre, was also attended by the Speaker of the Serbian Assembly, Ivica Dačić and the Chargé d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy, as well as numerous journalists, guests and visitors.

The screenplay for the film was written by Hajrudin Krvavac, Djordje Lebovic, Momo Kapor and Savo Preca, while Igor Galo said that the actors who acted in the film, Rade Markovic, Dragomir Bojanic Gidra, Faruk Begolli and Pavle Vuisic, were the bards of the Yugoslav film.

Musician, writer and screenwriter Nele Karajlić said that we are celebrating “the first 50 years of a great cinematic spectacle”, an important and irreplaceable film, which “magic managed to hypnotize everyone who saw at least one shot of it”.

Karajlic says that “China loved Valter because the film was as pure as clear water…and because of the irresistible charm of Zivojinovic, who crossed all the boundaries of the genre and became like Gary Cooper in the western “High Noon” or Sean Connery as James Bond in “Goldfinger”.
